San Rafael Police Get $119,000 in Grants For DUI and Traffic Enforcement

The City of San Rafael Police Department has been awarded two grants for DUI enforcement and to administer a year long general traffic enforcement program. The Grant money will be used for DUI checkpoints, cell phone and texting enforcement, seatbelt enforcement and to run stings in which officers follow people who drive away from court after having their driver’s license suspended or revoked.

Drunk driving checkpoints are commonplace in San Rafael, Novato and other cities in Marin County. Although these checkpoints amount to a warrantless intrusion and their effectiveness can be questioned, the courts have ruled that checkpoints are legal provided that the police follow guidelines including the giving of advance notice to motorists, the use of proper warning signs and lighting and a neutral based formula for stopping cars.

If you are charged with a DUI in Marin County you could be punished with probation, fines, a DUI school and up to 6 months in jail under the California Vehicle Code. Punishment is greater for people with multiple offenses for driving under the influence. Whether arrested for DUI in Ross, Mill Valley, Nicasio, or San Rafel, you need to call an experienced aggressive driving under the influence attorney for help.
